A rolling stone gathers no moss

Proverbs have been used for decades. Perhaps it is their simple and concrete way of saying the truth that makes them so popular between everybody. The easiness with which someone can relate at least one of them to their ordinary life is incredible. Those practical experiences of humanity are the ones that bond us together. As humans we have our doubts, and what is better than a proverb to remind us of the basic rules of life?

“A rolling stone gathers no moss” can be interpreted in many different ways, but that’s the magic of proverbs. Everyone can adapt them to their situation and no one would be wrong doing so. Let me tell you my version based on the perception of my life. Not so long ago I suffered from a severe depression. I had no animus to do anything, and my body didn’t either. It was hard to even take a few steps to the bathroom because my lungs would get exhausted.

This feeling of motionless started getting worse. I wouldn’t had encouragement to read, even though is one of my favorite hobbies. I spent all day in bed sleeping because I didn’t have the strength to do anything else. It felt like a strong force pressing my chest letting me unable to do anything. We went to several medical specialists but there was nothing wrong with my heart, lungs, or brain. Finally, a friendly doctor came to the realization that it was everything on my mind. Even though there was no apparent reason for what I was going through.

I remember his words because those where the ones that saved me. He told me “Push yourself no matter what. Do what you used to like even though you don’t feel like it.” So did I. I gather the strength to grab and read a book and went out every time I was able although it seemed like an impossible task at first. It wasn’t easy but it was possible.

I started to move again, letting all the moss that once kept me in a bed in the past. Sometimes it haunts me, but I keep pushing myself and moving forwards. And that’s the thing about life, it can consume you if you keep stuck and dwelling on the moss and negative things that surrounds you. We are stones, we might be reshaped during the hard path of life but that’s what makes us special. Thankfully we can move and progress letting everything back.

Feel free to share your experience.

The amazing "Rock N' Roller Coaster"

So, last week my english teacher give my group a task. We had to wrote an essay of a memory. I decided to write it about my experience through one of the most amazing attractions at Walt Disney World Orlando, FL. The machine is named "Rock N' Roller Coaster Staring Aerosmith". I liked the outcome of the essay so I decided to share it here with all of you. I hope you like it.

The amazing “Rock N’ Roller Coaster”

Walt Disney World is a well-known place to build memories and makes one’s special dream came true. Almost everybody has desire to meet their favorite character of Disney. Others just want to enjoy the famous attractions of the park. Some of them go at night-time to enjoy the awesome fireworks show at the end of the day. It doesn’t matter the reason why you want to be there because you are assured you will have a great and unforgettable time.

As soon as I saw the name of the “Rock N’ Roller Coaster staring Aerosmith” on the map of the Hollywood Studios park I knew it would be our first attraction. When mom and I arrived to the machine, the line was long. When we noticed that the other line called “Single Rider” was shorter we moved toward it without knowing why the “Single Rider” was different. After a while we realized that when a single-rider line is in use, empty seats on the ride vehicles are filled using individuals from the line. So, mom and I wouldn’t be together on the same ride. We were even more nervous by then.

The “Rock N’ Roller Coaster staring Aerosmith” is an enclosed steel roller coaster. After a while, when we enter the building there was a room like a music recording studio. Behind the glass, there were some kind of projections of the members of Aerosmith. They were talking and saying that they were late for a concert. Lead singer Steven Tyler expressed regret at being forced to leave the band's fans and requested backstage passes for all of us. The manager of the band summons a "super stretch" limo, to carry us to the concert and direct us outside.

As soon as we got out of the recording studio we passed through an alley into a parking garage. In there we waited in line. A few minutes later it was my turn. I was nervous, excited, and a little scared because I wouldn’t ride in the “limo” with mom. After loading passengers, the "limo" stopped at the entrance to a tunnel. Music was playing and an overhead variable message sign displayed a series of several different messages until a countdown. Then the car went from 0 to 92 km/h in like 2 seconds and I started to scream very loud. It was dark inside, and suddenly the car was upside-down and I was screaming even louder.

The ride was amazing, the car made a lot of different inversions at a super high speed. As I said, it was dark but sometimes I glimpsed different street signals. The music was really loud and coordinated with the moves of the ride. Finally, when the ride ended the limo arrived at Aerosmith's concert backstage, letting us off onto a red carpet. I thought that mom was behind the limo but she wasn’t. I was starting to panic after a couple of minutes. But when the other group arrived there was mom. When we met the first thing she said was “That ride was awesome!” and indeed, it was.

The universe is really in us?

While I was wandering through the same APP which I refer to in my post named Why fear solitude? I find another quote that captured my attention. This time the quote reads "To describe myself in a scientific way, I must also describe my surroundings, which is a clumsy way of getting around to the realization that you are the entire universe." it was said by Alan Watts. -Again, I didn't knew who the author was so I did a quick search, Alan Wilson Watts was a British-born philosopher, writer, and speaker.- So now back to the quote; to be honest I have never really understand why some people says that we are made of the universe, and as an astronomy lover I feel intrigued. While I was looking for more information about it I find a beautiful, well made and interesting video that somehow explains it. So, why not share it will all of you? Here it is, enjoy!

After watching it, I understand that statement some people say; "We are all made of the universe." And I think that yes, in fact the universe is in us. Now, what do you think about it? As stated in the video, do you feel small because the universe is immense or you feel big because you are made by the atoms that came from those stars? Me? Well, somehow I feel connected and complete.

Why fear solitude?

It's been a while since I was thinking in writing something new but rather my "lack of time" or my LAZINESS haven't let me. Today I'm making the most of this free period on school to share something with you.

I'm a person who when there's no "good" company around prefer to hang out alone than with people I barely know or for some kind of reason simply don't want to spend  my time with. Some people think I'm weird for that and to be honest I had never understand their fear to spent sometime alone. So somehow I was on an app I had downloaded a few months ago and I read something that caught my attention. It was a quote by Mary Sarton, an American poet, novelist and memoirist. (I just have looked at few lines of her biography right now, before that I don't have any idea of who she was.) Anyways, the quote says "Loneliness is the poverty of self; solitude is the richness of self." At the beginning I don't understand it but thanks god this words where underneath as an explanation by the author of the app: "Many of us have been conditioned to find being alone with the self frightening or unpleasant. This is often because in quiet and lack of distraction the voices in our heads are loud, distressing, and unavoidable. As we learn to appreciate and enjoy who we truly are, rather than fearing the person the voices project we are, we begin to crave alone time with that person we love." And there's somehow the explanation to my always pounding interrogation.
Awesome isn't it?

                                                                                           A BIG psychological hug, RM.
